5 Things To Consider Before You Wall-Mount Your TV

Wall-mounting a television is a practical solution, freeing up space in the room and providing a comfortable platform to watch your favourite shows and movies. However, the work involved – and the potential costs involved if you get it wrong – can be more than a little daunting. Follow our practical advice to ensure you get the best results.

tvFind the ideal place: Work out the best position to mount your TV. This could be over the fireplace, for example, or on a main feature wall. Alternatively, you might want to place the television at a slight angle in the corner of the room. Think about where you’ll be seated when you are watching television to find the best viewing angle, and avoid putting it in a position where it will be affected by screen glare.

How are you going to mount it? Once you decide on the exact position to hang the TV you need to decide on the best mounting method. The best option is to choose an approved wall bracket that fixes firmly to the wall. Read the manual that comes with the TV for advice about weight, fixing instructions and the type of bracket you should be using. Think carefully about the height at which you’d like your TV to be mounted as well.

Do you want to conceal the wires? Before you fix a bracket to the wall, decide whether you want to conceal the AV and power cables. If you want the wires totally hidden you’ll need to ‘chase’ channels into your wall which is a rather labour intensive task. Cable covers are an easier option, they help to manage your cables and you can paint over them afterwards.

Can somebody help you? It’s handy to have another pair of hands around when you are mounting a TV to the wall. Another person will be useful, especially when you are lifting the LCD TV onto the bracket, they can take some of the strain. Make sure somebody is available to help on the day you mount the TV. It’ll save time, you can work together on the project and prevent any accidents.

Are you a confident DIY-er? Mounting a TV to a wall isn’t for everyone. Some people will struggle with this type of work, and as you’ll be hanging hundreds – if not thousands – of pounds worth of equipment, not to mention potentially damaging your walls, it may be best to bring in the professionals if you’re at all unsure.
