TV wall mounting can prevent child deaths

Posted by

When we child proof our home many people don’t think of TV wall mounting as part of it. Yet injury and even death can come from unstable TV’s and professionally installed TV wall mountain can remove many big risks in your home.

“1 child every 2 weeks dies when a TV, furniture or appliance falls on him or her” – Consumer product safety commission

This is the startling statistic from the consumer product safety commission, released during their “Anchor it” campaign. Much like any aspect of your home your TV has to be child proofed if a young child is going to live there. Almost 70% of these deaths were because of unsecured TV’s meaning that over 18 child deaths a year were down to a TV set.

On top of that over 3 children an hour are injured when a TV, furniture or appliance falls on them, meaning that over 25,000 injuries a year are down to improperly secured house hold products. This make proper TV wall mounting a real health and safety issue when child proofing your home.

Mount flat-screen TVs to the wall or to furniture to prevent them from toppling over.” – Consumer product safety commission on TV wall mounting

TV wall mounting puts the TV far away from the ground, this means there is far less risk of a serious accident and the child is unable to climb on top of the set. Our in house team offer a TV wall mounting service, and this isn’t just for TV’s you buy from us. We can mount almost any flat screen with either a swivel or standard bracket and we offer a range of ways to hide, contain and conceal wires, all of which makes your home that bit safer.

End reception pain with a high gain aerial

Posted by

Try to watch Freeview television in a weak reception area and the picture will be less than perfect if your aerial isn’t up to scratch. Old or damaged aerials are a waste of time in poor reception areas – you might as well have a metal coat hanger linked to your television for all the good your aerial is going to do.

A simple upgrade to a high gain aerial should deliver promising results though, this is something we are highly proficient at and we’d be happy to come and survey the situation at JNB.

High gain aerials are just one of the many solutions we provide as standard to our customers and they can be useful for a number of reasons, like some of the points raised in this blog…

1) High gain aerials improve signal strength
Standard aerials can sometimes struggle to pick up signals in fringe areas. We class fringe areas as being on the very outskirts of transmitter boundaries. They might be a good distance away and struggle to receive good quality signals as a result.

One simple but effective solution is to replace standard aerials with a high gain antenna. This picks up signals from weaker transmitters and can improve reception in poorly performing areas, where normal solutions struggle to cope.

2) They reduce ghosting
High gain aerials often have anti-ghosting properties too. Ghosting happens when signals are out of phase. Viewers witness what appear to be ‘ghosts’ on the television, in most cases this happens to the right of the screen. By fitting a high gain aerial the signals are brought back into phase and the ghosts disappear.

Factors to consider when installing high gain aerials…

High gain aerials are very effective but even they can struggle in areas with very poor reception. Every situation is different. The position of the aerial, the location of the nearest transmitter and the size of the aerial mast are just some of the factors you should think about if you are struggling with poor reception in a weak transmitter area.

Good advice helps, and that’s where we come in at JNB. Call us, we’ll recommend the ideal antenna solution for your particular needs, whether that involves a high gain aerial or some other signal booster.

The most common TV issues

Posted by

Here at JnB Aerials we’ve helped hundreds of people get their new TV up and running. And that means we’ve seen quite a few problems with televisions, some of which are more common than others.
And that’s what we’re going to look at here – the more common TV problems and a few suggestions to fix them.
No picture – One of the worst issues on the list, there’s no point in having a television if it isn’t producing images! This could be down to a number of reasons. Sounds obvious but your first port of call should be the wires. Make sure each one is connected in the right port according to the manual. If you still don’t have a picture, turn to the input channels. Many new TV’s have a number of input channel’s, for your console, DVD player and so on. You could be on the wrong one.
A dead pixel – A frustrating issue that’s a common occurrence in many television sets. It appears when one of the pixels on screen malfunctions causing a change in colour. It isn’t often found in plasma and LCD screens, but if it occurs to your TV, you’ll have difficulty getting it fixed.
Burn-in – You’ve probably experienced or heard of the two issues above, but this one isn’t seen too often any more. It mainly affects plasma screens. It’s when an image remains on the screen for a while even after the set is turned off. Thankfully, it isn’t usually permanent, but there are instances where it can become permanent. To avoid it, make sure the TV is turned off when not in use.
Black bars on screen – Many people think that there’s an issue with their TV when black bars appear, but it’s perfectly normal. It just means that the movie or game you’re watching was designed for a different display. These black bars are filling out the unused space. You may be able to adjust the display to make the picture fit the display, but beware. This may distort the images.
Dark or discoloured image – This problem is a simple one to fix. Chances are your display settings aren’t organised properly. Simply open up the settings menu and play around with the sharpness, brightness and colour settings to find the image you want.
If you’re still having trouble with your TV or there’s another issue, then ring us here at JnB aerials. Like we said, we have years of experience fixing TVs, so we’re sure we can help!

Freaky weather that spoils your viewing pleasure

Posted by

It drives you mad when you are getting ready to watch BGT on a Saturday night armed with the biggest bag of tortillas known to mankind and the telly goes on the blink.
What an earth could be causing the problem this time?
The chances are it’s either your aerial or satellite dish that’s causing the fault and the culprit that’s made this mess is Mother Nature. Here are some instances where poor weather conditions affect viewing pleasure.
Heavy rain – Is it raining outside? You live in the UK so there’s a pretty good chance it is! You’ll probably hear the rain so there’s no need to peer through the curtains, sadly, this downpour might be affecting your viewing pleasure. A condition known as ‘rain fade’ is the culprit, where microwave radio frequency is absorbed by atmospheric rain, wait until the shower passes and your telly should be back to normal.
Heavy snow – It’s the middle of winter, your tucked up on the sofa wearing a onesie sipping a cup of chocolate and you lose the signal just as you’re about to watch ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ for the millionth time. Take a peek outside, is your satellite dish covered in snow? This could be the culprit that’s causing the problem, all that snow is blocking the signal!
Heavy wind – Can’t get a picture on your television after a wind storm the night before? Go outside and stand back away from the house, get a clear picture of your aerial. Firstly, is it still there? If not, it will have to be replaced. Secondly, if the aerial is still there, is it facing the right way? Look at the other aerials on the houses in your street, if they’re pointing in a different way your aerial needs adjusting because the wind has blown it in the wrong direction.
There’s not a lot you can do about the weather but there’s plenty you can do if you are having problems with television signals, calling the team at JNB isn’t a bad place to start.

Get the most from home movies

We love movies at JNB, when we’re not installing aerials and satellite dishes to houses in Gorton, Salford, Sale and Swinton you’ll find us tucked up at home with a mega bucket of popcorn watching our favourite flicks.
Movie night is a special occasion, it takes a bit a bit of planning to pull it off properly but when you do, it’s the best evening of the week!
Here’s what we suggest to make movies at home memorable.
Create the right setting – To really appreciate a blockbuster movie in all its blood, guts and glory you have to create the ideal setting. A bespoke movie theatre is the perfect answer complete with large screen, cinema seating and concealed sound. If you have the time, the money and the space to turn a room in your house into a cinema space go for it, you only live once! Or for those of us on more modest budgets, a large LCD screen, BluRay player, a sound bar and subwoofer will create a great movie experience for less expense.
Crank the sound up – It doesn’t matter which film you choose make sure you pump up the volume. Obviously surround sound is best, play Star Wars at full volume and it feels like you are leading the Empire attack.
Have food on the go – Popcorn, hot dogs and bags of sweets are essential for movie night, keep them handy and munch and rustle as much as you like, there are no other movie-goers to annoy you with their constant shushing and complaining.
And drink… Buy a 3 litre bottle of coke, chill it and see if you can drink the lot whilst watching Gladiator.
Keep the remote close – All that coke will go straight through you, keep the remote handy just in case you need to pause the film and rush off for a toilet break.
Ignore your phone – This is movie night so turn your phone off or have it on silent, what’s the point in pressing play on the BluRay if you plan on chatting throughout the production?
Stick to this plan when you watch movies at home and those blockbusters will be brilliant.
Enjoy!

How to protect your home on a budget

Posted by

Your home is important to you. A treasure trove of beloved belongings.
And the perfect place for a thief to earn some money.
That’s why it’s important you adequately protect your home. But the problem is you can’t afford all this fancy security technology.
Thankfully there are ways to protect it without spending all your money.
Trim the garden
The last thing on earth a burglar wants is to be seen on their approach. And so they usually target houses with lots of shrubs, trees and hidey holes.
Don’t give them the opportunity!
Keep all your plants, shrubs and trees cut back. Otherwise a burglar will see them as the perfect hiding places.
Don’t advertise
So you’ve just purchased a new TV. It’s big, looks great and sounds just as good and you want to show it off a little. You sit it next to your front window for all your neighbours to see.
Not a great idea.
Burglars scout properties. They look for homes that look like they’re packed to the rafters with goodies. If they see that lovely new TV next to your window they’ll soon start to wonder what other treats are hidden inside.
And then they’ll figure out how to get in.
Light it up
As we said, burglars don’t like to be seen. You’ve cut back all of the potential hiding places, great job. But they can still make their way up to your house in the dead of night.
Install sensor lights.
As soon as a burglar approaches they’ll flash on, causing the burglar to bolt before they reach the door.
If there’s one thing a burglar doesn’t like, it’s being in the spotlight.
Make friends with your neighbours
Who doesn’t love a nice holiday? You’ve worked for the past 6 months. You want to get away and enjoy some sun for a while.
But burglars might spot that there’s no one home and think it the perfect opportunity to strike.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go on holiday. What it does mean though, is that you should put some protective measure in place. The best one of which is to ask a little help from your neighbours.
Give one that you trust your key and ask them to pop by every couple of days to make sure everything is in order. If a burglar knows the property is regularly checked, they aren’t going to touch it.
Build a border
This is a really simple measure that proves to be quite effective. By simply placing fencing around your property you can deter burglars. When they try to make their way towards your front door, the fence, or wall could end up being one obstacle too many.
Trick them
Burglars aren’t the most intelligent bunch. If you place a few signs around your property telling them you have state of the art security systems and a huge dog, they probably won’t run the risk.
You don’t actually have to have a dog or security system tough. How are they going to know otherwise?
